The shed has been very useful to us as a store and workshop not only for ourselves but for our three founding clubs who also used the shed. In the early days, storage and workshop facilities were actually more important as far as the clubs were concerned than an auditorium, as they had been working in such locations as farm outbuildings, but all are now agreed that we can cope using accommodation in the Theatre and in the old Unity hut which has been made wind and watertight, and altered internally to maximise the space.

Having ploughed all of our funds into the church there now began another round of grant applications to secure funding to convert the church into a theatre. The Scottish Arts Council had awarded us £5,000 for the shed project, and this was held over and used in the first phase of the conversion of the church. An application to the Foundation for Sport and the Arts was successful although only for 40% of the sum requested, and a grant was also obtained from Galloway Groundbase.
Again Brian Murray was the architect, although by this time he had moved to Largs. We are frequently complimented on the design of the Theatre and are grateful to Brian for the sympathetic way he envisaged the conversion.

Celebrating 50 years in show business
It is now 50 years since they made their first appearance as professional entertainers at the Webster Theatre in Arbroath, Scotland. Ross Bowie became their Manager, an association that lasted 35 years. He introduced them to songwriter Tony Hatch who took them to London and recording fame. They had their own TV series for many years and appeared on the legendary 'Sunday Night at the London Palladium'. They have appeared in all the top venues all over the world including the Carnegie Hall, New York and the famous Sydney Opera House.

In recent years Tom & Jack were awarded the MBE by her Majesty The Queen at Buckingham Palace for their services to music, "This was a very proud moment for both of us" said Tom, "We're just a couple of boys fae Scotland" Said Jack...well deserved I think we would all say.

Backbeat Beatles

The band was formed in 1994 by musician/actor Chris O'Neill inspired by his successful acting performance in the BAFTA Award winning Beatle film 'BACKBEAT'. The lads are all from the Liverpool area and have long shared a mutual admiration for The Beatles and had played alongside Chris in other bands previously.

Following numerous TV appearances and a country wide P.A. tour they were snapped up to appear in the highly successful 'Ultimate Tribute Show' late in 1994 which toured major UK theatres and cities.

1995 and 1996 saw their popularity increase with several UK and European tours of major venues including their own complete history of the Beatles show which toured Apollo theatres and appearances on The Big Breakfast. The Backbeat Beatles and Chris O'Neill himself has also been the subject of several articles in the press.

"The Backbeat Beatles are probably the nearest you will get to the real thing" The Daily Mirror.

"BACKBEAT is one of THE great 'rock n roll' movies ever. Chris O'Neill (George Harrison) shows he is as charismatic on stage as he is on screen" Empire.

The Backbeat Beatles don't just give a Beatles history lesson by preaching about song release dates and repeating every quip John Lennon ever made like other tribute bands do, which often leads to a very flat show. They perform with an energy and spontaneity that makes for a fun, enjoyable evening for everyone involved.

The Backbeat Beatles are undoubtedly the best Beatles tribute band on the circuit and have built up an unrivalled reputation. They were recently asked to perform at the Sporting Club of Monaco for the Forte International Hotels Conference, where they were received exceptionally well. The manager of the Sporting Club said they were the first band he has asked to do an encore in fifteen years! This is remarkable when you consider that top international stars have played there.

The Backbeat Beatles offer superb renditions of favourite Beatles hits from love Me Do through to Let It Be wearing both classic Beatles suits and full Sgt. Pepper regalia. Along With this, their excellent level of musicianship and irrepressible scouse wit and humour means that their success continues to spiral and their fan club is beginning to bulge at the seams!

It may have been "forty years ago today" but in 2007 their music has never been more relevant
